San Marzano

In the year 1962, 19 winemakers in San Marzano joined hands to form the Cantine San Marzano wine label. San Marzano is a small town in the centre of the Primitivo di Manduria DOP, a strip of land between the seas that wash over the Puglia region.

This union is unusual and significant as during that time, the village didn’t belong to a formal appellation. Yet the winemakers came together to create a label that was to produce wines that represented the true terroirs of Italy.

The first bottle of Cantine San Marzano was released in 1996. In 2002, the group released its flagship wine, the Sessantanni. San Marzano’s iconic label encapsulates its philosophy and essence. Produced from old vines, it is the expression of a thousand-year relationship between their people and the Primitivo grape. Sessantanni Primitivo di Manduria DOP is the label that has changed the perception of Puglian wines throughout the world.

Through the decades, this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 vine growers. Using modern and technologically advanced vinification techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of time honoured tradition, passion and contemporary techniques, enables this winery to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics while reflecting the local terroir.
