Yangarra Roussanne 2017
Yangarra Roussanne is textural and so easy to drink, an undeniable high-quality example of this famous Rhone white variety.
Pale gold colour with green highlights. Rich bouquet of apricots, white peaches, quince and Meyer lemon with subtle nuances of honey and dried white flowers. Deep and rich medium-bodied palate with a crisp acidity and creamy, oily texture for a smooth ride. Wet stone minerals are the foundation for a fruit mix of ripe peach, apple and citrus with undertones of honeycomb toffee and brioche. Closes with a persistent buttery and nutty finish.
100% Roussanne. From two blocks on the east-facing Yangarra estate vineyard, which overlies the 54 million years old North Maslin Sands geological formation. The vineyard is 180 metres above sea level and its vines were planted in 1999. The vineyard is certified Organic and Biodynamic (certification # 11587) with Australian Certified Organic. No herbicides, pesticides, or synthetic chemicals have been used in growing these grapes.
After hand-picking, the grapes go through careful pressing. Only 60% of the extractable juice is used for the wine to eliminate any potential broadness. No sulphur additions. The juice is then put in French oak puncheons (25% New) without any settling or fining, where it undergoes wild yeast fermentation. Ageing for 7 months on lees with monthly stirring. No fining, just filtration.
Yangarra’s got some divine Australian reds too, find what we’ve got available here.
AWARDS & ACCOLADES
It all sees oak, though only 10% of it is new. This just has that something extra; it carries along in competent style but the sparks really fly on the finish. It’s slippery and textural, though not oily, fresh with fruit, and then wild with dry spice, roasted nuts, fennel, fruit and mineral to close. You want more? It gives it to you. Drink to 2021.
Poached quince and pears with spicy and lightly honeyed aromas. The palate has a smoothly formed, fleshy texture. The honeyed, lees-derived influence sits well in this complex and textural white. Drink now. — Nick Stock, Top 100 Australian Wines.
