Yangarra Blanc 2020

Yangarra Blanc is a lovely spring/summer wine full of flavour and personality. A blend of Rhone varieties gives this exotic tropical wine a lovely texture and some vibrancy. It has hints of apple, apricot and is overall an easy drink. Pop a bottle during one of the hot and humid evening and enjoy the refreshing touch of this White.

The Yangarra Blanc is a blend of 74% Grenache Blanc, 12% Roussanne, 6% Clariette, 5% Picpoul, 3% Bourboulenc. An Australian first; a heat resilient blend of white varieties sourced in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and grown on newly planted cuttings here on our single-vineyard Estate in McLaren Vale. From vineyards grown over sandy loam over clay and sandy loam mottled with ironstone fragments over clay.

The wine is based on simplicity of winemaking and showcasing the fresh and crunchy style of these varieties. The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunch pressed. The winemakers pressed and fermented all the Grennache Blanc and Roussanne separately. The Picpoul, Clariette and Bourboulenc were picked together, as the ripeness was very similar and they were in small volumes. The unclarified juicewas fermented in 675 litres ceramic eggs and older French oak barriques, with no acid or sulphur added. These varieties are supposedly very susceptible to oxidation, but a better result was produced without additional sulphur until the completion of primary sugar fermentation. The resulting wine was less then matured in those same vessels on the lees and stirred monthly for 4 months.

From an article in Australian Wine Business Magazine in Sept 2018, “Yangarra’s New “Heat Resistant” Blend Called Blanc an Austrlaian First”..“On the back of Grenache Noir’s success in our region, it seemed logical to pursue Chateauneuf top whites on our southern coast. They ripen later, so better survive the heat of January and February.”
