Torre de Oña presents its most innovative and expressive estate wine

Quite dry Blend Slight Wood Rioja Medium+ Tannin Full Body Licorice

Torre de Oña Martelo Reserva 2014

Clean and bright ruby red colour, with a marked garnet-red rim. Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva reveals vibrant raspberry, cherry and cranberry fruit enveloped by balsamic, vanilla, liquorice and clove spice. Outstanding freshness and balance in the mouth, coupling a pleasant acidity with silky, fatty tannins that give it a good structure and a pleasant mouthfeel. Chocolate-coated cherry character with hints of vanilla on the palate. Long, well-balanced aftertaste, promising great persistence over time as it ages in the bottle.

After years of studying the vineyard and intensive oenological work, Torre de Oña presents its most innovative and expressive estate wine. The Torre de Oña estate is a part of Grupo La Rioja Alta, S.A., one of the most impressive and resolutely traditional of the regions’s bodegas.

Idyllic surroundings. A silent sea of vineyards. An allegorical setting. The Torre de Oña winery is located in one of the most exclusive and privileged regions of the Rioja Alavesa subzone, part of the Rioja D.O.Ca., where the best wineries and vineyards of this recognised winemaking area are located. The vineyards are watched over by the Cantabria Ridge, which acts as a protective barrier for wind and cold from the north. At 630 metres above sea level, it is situated close to the altitude limit for grapevine growing in this area.

The ‘Martelo vineyard’ is very special and difficult to manage, as the quality of the cultivated grapes depends largely on weather conditions throughout the growth cycle. This is why Martelo is only produced in very good or excellent years. Produced with grapes from their oldest vines, the wine comprises a grape variety blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura. Starting in 2005, the terroir of each plot was studied carefully and vinified separately. Martelo Reserva is a single vineyard red – what they call a field blend. The grapes were put through a cold soak after alcoholic fermentation then in barrique for a slow malolactic fermentation of 96 days. This was followed by an élevage in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels for two years, during which time it was racked four times.

This wine is released as Martelo in Spain but that be renamed as Finca Martelo in the international market. So, I tasted the 2014 again but this time labeled as 2014 Finca Martelo. The wine hasn’t changed much since the last time I tasted it; it’s aromatic and showy, with elegance and poise, nicely balanced and perfumed with a medium body and very fine tannins, intense flavors and a long finish. It’s evolving very slowly, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it made old bones. 80,000 bottles produced.

– 94 Points

The vines in this small two-hectare plot on very poor soils, made as a separate wine for the first time in 2012, are all over 80 years’ old. The result is a wine with impressive focus and concentration, dense black fruits, refreshing acidity and the texture to integrate the 100% new French oak. 2022-2032

Vivid ruby-red. An expressive bouquet evokes red and dark berry preserves, exotic spices and vanilla, and tobacco and potpourri qualities build with air. Supple and seamless on the palate, offering appealingly sweet cherry cola and black raspberry flavors, along with hints of mocha and candied rose. Fine-grained tannin’s add subtle grip to a long, lively finish that strongly echoes the floral note. Sourced from a two-hectare plot of vines and raised in new oak barrels, 80% French and 20% American. Drinking window: 2021 – 2029

This rich red delivers a mix of ripe fruit and savory flavors, with cherry, roasted plum, tobacco, loamy earth and spicy character. Well-integrated tannins and balsamic acidity provide focus. Generous and harmonious. Drink now through 2028.

A soft and fruity wine with chocolate and bright berry character. Fresh and integrated with velvety tannins. Delicious and flavorful at the finish. Drink or hold.
