Tenuta Perano Chianti Riserva 2016

Tenuta Perano Chianti Riserva immediately presents a brilliant ruby red colour with violet reflections. Its bouquet is complex and intense. Floral scents, ranging from sweet violet to dog-rose immediately pervade the nose; fruity notes soon make their entrance, recalling blackcurrant and blueberry. Over time, the emphasis shifts to tertiary notes evoking nutmeg and black pepper, as well as cocoa powder. A balsamic sensation gives infinite elegance to the wine. It surprises in the mouth with its freshness, persistence and length. The tannic texture is dense, as is appropriate for Sangiovese from the most suitable soils. It closes with hints of noble tobacco and leather. The finish is long and harmonious.

In the heart of Chianti Classico, nestled within a natural amphitheater facing southwest, exceptionally unique soil and climate conditions exist for the production of this Riserva Chianti Classico. Here, five hundred meters above sea level, the Tenuta Perano vineyards in Gaiole in Chianti offer all the characteristics for Sangiovese to find its most elegant and personable expression. Fruit of a careful handpicked selection, the wine is aged in Slavonia oak barrels for 24 months.

The history of this wine was born above all in the vineyard, where altitude, exposure and slope contribute to the elegance and expressiveness of the grapes. Once harvested by hand and carefully selected, they are fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Frequently breaking up the cap allows for a perfect polyphenolic extraction able to determine the typical colour and structure of a Chianti Classico Riserva. The prolonged period of maturation in wood certainly contributes to the structural intensity of this wine, further aged in the bottle for a period. At the end of this period, Tenuta Perano Riserva 2016 is ready to make its début on the scene.

A harsh climate rich in rainfall characterised the winter of 2016, with intense frosts and snow. Sprouting was regular and arrived in the second half of April, in line with the timing of this phenological stage. Mild spring temperatures favoured the development of the surface of the leaves, gently accompanying the flowering vines in the first week of June. The hot, sunny, breezy summer days created the best possible opportunity for photosynthesis. Veraison saw the Tenuta Perano bunches change colour in the month of August, a period during which two beneficial rains occurred, allowing the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness and succulence. 2016 bestowed a series of extraordinary wines, both in the intensity of their aromas and their noble structure.

From Gaiole, with free-draining soils, the land has formed a natural amphitheatre with southwest-facing slopes at 500m. The 2016 vintage produced intensely aromatic, structured wines. After hand-harvesting, the wine was fermented in stainless steel with regular breaking of the cap, before being transferred to Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. Aldo Fiordelli: Dense on the palate with silky ripe tannins, cherry fruit and a concentration of darker fruit, along with perfectly integrated structure. A great wine, with great potential. Andrew Jefford: Sweet and elegant aromas: fine leather, fresh red fruits, bay leaf, underbrush, a hint of fungi porcini – everything you hope for, quietly expressed. Intense and vibrant: a super wine. More dominated by its acidity than many, but that acidity is singingly bright and packed with fruit flavour. The tannins are like silk rope: smooth yet ample and gathered. Very beautiful and engaging, long, concentrated and intense. Monty Waldin: Clear, precise ripe red fruit, lovely balance and compactness to this.

A new estate in Chianti Classico, Frescobaldi’s Tenuta Perano is on a roll. Their 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Perano is impeccably balanced and rich, yet the wine remains bright and lifted at the same time. You get that proverbial twofold punch of power and elegance that is such a special and happy achievement. Dark cherry, blackberry, sweet spice and crushed limestone emerge carefully from the bouquet. I must say, I prefer this wine to a great majority of Brunello samples recently tasted.

 – 93 Points

Pure and saturated flavors of black currant, blackberry and violet are the hallmarks of this red. Harmonious and approachable despite the solidly built structure, featuring freshness and a lingering aftertaste of fruit, earth and iron. Best from 2021 through 2036.

This is a decadent Perano with lots of dried dark fruit, ranging from blackberries to dried elderberries and vanilla. Full body, plenty of plush dark fruit, muscular tannins and a fruit-driven finish. Drink from 2024.

Aromas of black-skinned fruit, toasted nut and scorched earth mix with a whiff of tobacco leaf. It’s firmly structured but elegant, offering ripe Marasca cherry, blackberry, brown pepper and a hint of orange zest alongside fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity. It closes on a coffee note.
