St John’s Road Blood & Courage Shiraz
Success never comes easy. If it did, everyone would have it. It means taking a leap of faith. It means failing and getting straight back up again for another crack. It takes drive and an unwavering belief in yourself. It takes dogged determination. It takes grit. It takes blood and courage.
Blood & Courage is our interpretation of quintessential Barossa Valley Shiraz. Power with elegance. Full and generous primary fruit flavours skillfully interwoven with oak characteristics from maturation in French oak Barriques and Hogsheads. This classic Barossa Shiraz is fresh and lively, yet rich in texture with subtle oak and soft, well integrated tannins – simply a stylish wine.
A wetter than average 2016 winter, and a mild summer with substantial early rains, lead to optimal soil conditions leading into the 2017 vintage. The result was a longer ripening period and greater yields which lead to increased florals and lovely elegance showing through in the Barossa Shiraz. The Shiraz fruit for our Blood and Courage comes from our Resurrection vineyard in Ebenezer, Paul and Angie Schutz’s vineyard in Stonewell and Andy Kalleske’s vineyard also in Ebenezer. Following harvest the grapes were fermented for 8 days in 10t open fermenters at 22 degrees. The grapes from our Resurrection Vineyard were barrelled down for 15 months in approximately 8% new French Barriques and Hogsheads, the Schutz parcel spent 6 months in French Hogsheads and the Kalleske parcel matured in stainless steel.
Medium density deep red with purple hues and a light purple rim. Bright red fruit characters of red cherry and raspberry. Florals of lavender and violet. Hints of roast meats and charcuterie. Slight white pepper and vanilla. Fruit sweetness coming through from bright red cherries and raspberries adds nice body to the mid palate. Fine tannins, medium length, very approachable with savoury characters balancing the fruit intensity.
Seems like drinking wines from St John’s vineyard gives us John Legend vibes, and rightfully so. Excuse me while I lay on my couch with “I know better” in surround sound.

Sweet fruit and interesting spices leap out of the glass after some heavy breathing, but it’s not a fruit bomb. It’s refined, almost elegant and light on its feet as it dances across the tongue. Lovely Shiraz.
2017 Blood and Courage: 91 points – Steve Leszczynski – Q Wine
Mouth-filling Barossa Shiraz. You can’t go wrong. Good fruit from three vineyards is matched with well-handled oak spending time in a mix of 15 months, 6 months and stainless steel. Plummy fruit is flanked by some blueberries, clove and soft fine spices. Pepper kicks on to a drawn out finish. Well weighted, it’s a wine sure to match a range of dishes or for that simple pleasure of sitting in front of a fire or a lazy night in front of the television. Good stuff. Drink now to five years.

Ranked 106 of 153 Shiraz from Barossa Valley
Deep red colour with purple tints, the bouquet plummy and fresh, clean and spicy, attractively definitively shirazzy. It’s medium-bodied and very spicy in the mouth, seemingly from a cooler climate, with abundant peppercorn and clove notes. There’s a touch of firmness on the finish. A fruit-driven style.
