Louis Roederer Philippe Starck Brut Nature 2012 Rose

A combination of precision, sweetness, saline freshness and smokiness that give a delicious Umami taste sensation. The Brut Nature is a reinvention of champagne, purer and more elegant than anything you’ve ever tasted. This champagne is born out of a partnership between Champagne House Louis Roederer and French designer Philippe Starck, a combination as unlikely as the Queen of England and Johnny Rotten. It’s a crash of royalty and punk.

“A new page has been written and the story continues. It is like the second volume of a literary work penned by Louis Roederer. Champagne is a project, a relationships with the other, a celebration, an encounter. It’s love.” — Philippe Starck, Creator.

Crisp and pure with flavours of wild raspberries. Orange hue with salmon pink tints. Fruity and intense with a gentle fizz. The bouquet contains spicy aromas of Sichuan pepper combined with notes of floral violet, toast and mocha. Intense fruity flavours emerge with notes of wild raspberries, strawberries, pink grapefruit, a few cherries and lemons. The palate is intensely fruity with a tight and juicy structure complemented by ripe, almost sweet tannins. The fruit and texture display remarkable depth and are beginning to show a typical “Pinot” character.

The grapes grow exclusively in the Coteaux de Cumières and the wine comprises a blend of 55% Pinot noir, 25% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay. The grapes are meticulously gathered by hand and collected in buckets before being delicately pressed on the site of the harvest. A small proportion of the domaine’s Pinot noirs are harvested separately and undergo a few days’ cold “infusion” without alcohol fermentation before being incorporated into the Brut Nature Blanc juices.nThe wine doesn’t go through malolactic fermentation and 15% of it is vinified in oak casks. No sugar.

The fresh strawberries here are so clear and alluring. Some peaches, too. The palate offers pink grapefruit and fresh cherries, laced with lemons and yellow grapefruit. Deep, mineral backbone with a smooth resolve. Buoyed with pink fruit. Drink now.

The 2012 Brut Nature Rosé is rich, explosive and pulsing with energy. Chef de Caves Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon adds an infusion of 25% cold soaked Pinot Noir into the same base wine as the 2012 Brut Nature, an approach that works beautifully in bringing out the energy and focus that make Champagnes from Cumières so distinctive. Even with all of its power, the 2012 is delicate, airy and full of nuance. This is such a gorgeous wine. I would prefer to drink it on the younger side
