Description

Gabrielskloof Landscape Series Elodie Chenin Blanc 2021

"South Africa is the only New World country that has significant plantings of old-vine Chenin Blanc. With Elodie, we want to show what we can do with this national treasure."

The Landscape Series is a range of five wines that show the best of Gabriëlskloof’s vineyards and winemaking. It aims to be a sincere representation of the elements that make them unique. The labels feature landscape paintings by Niël Jonker that reflect and capture the spirit of Overberg landscapes.

Made from old-vine Chenin Blanc grown in dryland that has never been irrigated. The fruit for this wine was sourced from two vineyards: Contermanskloof vineyard, Durbanville (1975) and Nuwedam vineyard, Swartland (1974). Both are labour intensive to farm and yield precious little fruit due to arid conditions. The grapes were whole bunch pressed with no additions. After rough settling in tank overnight, the juice was transferred to 400 and 500L old French oak barrels. Here it remained and wild fermented until blending before bottling.

Beautifully textured Chenin with a long and intense finish. Light, pale golden straw hue. Subtle flavours of white peach, apricot and baked pear on the nose. Layered with honey, almond and dried white flowers. Concentration from low yields is balanced by its silky mouthfeel, great natural acidity and remarkable freshness typical of old vine Chenin. Clear and brilliant.
