Burung Indonesia is BirdLife International in Indonesia. The organisation works with smallholder farmers to produce high-quality cacao while protecting the environment where 1,777 species of birds dwell. This micro-lot comes from the Popayato-Paguat Landscape in the Province of Gorontalo of Indonesia.

Communities in the Gorontalo Province are cocoa producers with area potential of around 2,400 Ha. Considering this, business partnership with local farmers is important because it can increase cocoa production while maintaining the community’s commitment to environmental conservation.
Burung Indonesia introduced the sustainable management of cocoa cultivation in 2015 and since then has succeeded in reactivating the cocoa farmer groups and increasing cocoa production both in quantity and quality. The Varietal grown by farmers partnered with Burung Indonesia are the superior clone Sulawesi 02, which not only produce high yield but also more resistant to pests and diseases. The pods are harvested all year long, but the main crop season lasts from May to July.
One important aspect in the development of a sustainable cocoa sector is social protection or the fulfillment of the rights of the community, especially women. Burung Indonesia strives to increase women’s involvement by including a minimum of 10% of women in training activities, strengthening farmer group organizations to post-harvest and marketing. At present, women are involved in pod wrapping, harvesting, bean sorting, bean fermentation and drying.
