Description

DOMAINE BERTHOUMIEU PACHERENC SEC 2010

From the South of France comes this bottle of Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng blend. Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh is an appellation specializing in sweet white wines from a small area of Gascony in far south-western France. Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh wines are late-harvested dessert wines made from various combinations of Petit CourbuPetit MansengGros MansengCourbu Blanc and Arrufiac. The classic Pacherenc de Vic-Bilh is sweet, rich and full flavored, with aromas of honey and tropical fruits. The less widely produced dry form, made from the same array of grape varieties, is Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh Sec.

“This wine is simply gorgeous. We affectionately call it the Pachy (Pah-She). The Berthoumieu Pacherenc Sec is one of the genuine white wine gems of South Western France. This wine comes from the region of Madiran, most famous for its red blends produced from the local variety named Tannat. However this local white is a combination of Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng. The juxtaposition of this blend is uncanny—its flavor profile is honeycomb, apricot, peach, and pineapple-driven. Yet its bone dry showing off brilliant elements of minerality at its core. If this wine is sweet you might even think you were drinking great Sauternes. Mark Ancona, the importer compares it to Chateau Ygrec-the great dry white of Chateau d’Yquem. Delicious. A must try.”

Lots of nutty, lightly oxidised style here. Elderflower and greengage fruitiness and the palate that delivers a lemony, dry punch. Lots of extract and that nuttiness comes through. Dry, uncompromising food-friendly wine.

AWARDS & ACCOLADES

90 pts – Tom Cannavan

“50% Gros Manseng 50% with Petit Manseng and Petit Courbu 25%, this comes from 50-year-old vines on gravelly clay, harvested at the start of October. Half is vinified in tank, half in new oak barriques. Lots of nutty, lightly oxidised style here, with tight, elderflower and greengage fruitiness and the palate that delivers a lemony, dry punch. Lots of extract and that nuttiness comes through. Dry, uncompromising food-friendly stuff.
