Bodegas Muga Rosado 2019
Rosé magic from Muga!
Bodegas Muga Rosado is always a classy rosé and the 2019 Rosado is no exception.
Bright salmon colour. Pretty bouquet of rose petals, raspberries and almonds. Fresh and lively with a smooth mouthfeel and a good acidity. Fruity flavours of wild strawberry and raspberry, white peach, red cherry, red apple and tropical notes dominate the palate. The soft red fruit attack is complemented by creamy vanilla notes that result in a beautifully balanced rosé with surprising complexity. Closes with a long, rich finish.
60% Grenache, 30% Viura and 10% Tempranillo. The grapes come from vineyards with mainly calcareous and ferrous clay soils from the upper Najerilla district.
At the time of optimum ripeness, the manual harvest begins. After transporting the grapes to the winery, they go through 5 hours of gentle maceration in the press. The must then ferments in small oak vats at a controlled temperature of 16–18°C for 15–20 days. This preserves the maximum aromatic complexity and intensity of the grapes. Once fermentation is complete, the wine ages for 3 months in oak. Before bottling, it undergoes cold stabilisation.

The 2019 Rosado was produced mainly with grapes from the Alto Najerilla zone of Rioja, where the soils have a mix of clay, limestone and iron that give them an intense red color. The must fermented in small oak vats for 15 to 20 days at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius and was kept with lees that were worked for three months before bottling. It has a similar profile as the white, slightly reductive at first and then opening up after some time in the glass. It’s tender and sleek, with integrated acidity and clean flavors with a pleasant bitter twist in the finish. It’s a blend of Garnacha and Viura plus whatever grapes might be in the old vineyards in the Najerilla zone.
Pleasant watermelon, pink-guava and peach character with some citrus. It’s medium-bodied with good fruit and a fresh finish. Macabeo, grenache and tempranillo. Drink now.
