Simon and Jane Waghorn’s complex, partly barrel-fermented Chenin Blanc shows that it’s not just South Africa that can impress with this Loire variety. Rich, creamy, leesy notes join honeyed apple crumble flavours and a squeeze of lemon acidity.
For a wine that has had a lot of work done to it (whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented with wild yeast, time on solids, lees stirring, aged in french barriques), this is a surprisingly delicate and unassuming little number. The nose is dainty with aromas of apples, blossoms and a little spice. The palate shows a lovely balance of texture and mouth watering acidity, juicy fruit and white spice. Drink now.
