Albert Bichot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Les Malconsorts’ 2017
Albert Bichot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru ‘Les Malconsorts’ is a jewel from an exceptional Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru. Pale ruby colour. Complex and floral bouquet of black cherry, violet and lavender aromas. Smooth mouthfeel carries the crisp medium-bodied palate, which possesses a vivid acidity and fine-grained tannin texture. Soft, fruity flavours of cherry, plum and raspberry with a touch of vanilla, sweet tobacco and cedar spices developing. Closes on a spicy finish.
100% Pinot Noir. This wine is created at one of Albert Bichot’s domaines in Burgundy, Domaine du Clos Frantin. Domaine du Clos Frantin is a beautiful 18th century estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges, at the heart of the Côte de Nuits. The grapes come from a 1.75 hectare plot in an exceptional Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru. This jewel sits close to legendary vineyards (less than 400 metres from Romanée-Conti and less than 600 metres from Richebourg). The vineyard is adjacent to La Tâche, an area renowned for being very sunny. The vineyard has an east or south-east exposure and limestone redzina soils. The vines have an average age of 35–40 years and are cultivated with sustainable practices.
Handpicking the grapes before fermentation in temperature-controlled conical oak vats for 20–28 days. The wine then ages in 100% oak barrels (20% new) for 14–18 months.
Fun fact: The name “Malconsorts” suggests that this land must once have been at the origin of disputes between “mauvais consorts” (bad partners), from the Latin word CONSORS meaning “associate, partner”. These litigants would have had a common interest in a case. the prefix “Mal-” would indicate that they conducted themselves inappropriately over land that they owned jointly.
Ageing potential: Cellar for 7–10 years!

AWARDS & ACCOLADES
A fragrant and complex Vosne-Romanée with deep black-cherry and floral notes on the nose. Then comes the rich and very elegant palate, the tannins almost completely masked by the fruit, until you reach the very powerful yet polished finish. Try in 2023.
– 93 POINTS
An overtly floral nose features notes of plum, violet, lavender and an impressive array of spice and tea nuances. The muscular and powerful yet reasonably refined broad-shouldered flavors exhibit evident minerality on the beautifully persistent and indisputably built-to-age finale. As do all competent examples of Malconsorts, this will require extended cellaring to resolve the very firm structure.
ISSUE 63, 2019 – 93 POINTS
A perfumed nose, floral and charming. Fresh, limpid and elegant on the palate, with fine-grained tannins and good underlying tannins. It’s not that demonstrative but it’s finely balanced and long. (Tasted by Stephen Brook.)
– 90-92 POINTS
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a clean, pure bouquet of black cherries, blueberry and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, fine weight in the mouth and a touch of sour cherry that enlivens the detailed finish.
