Poggio di Sotto

A winery dedicated to perfection, Poggio di Sotto is planted with a single variety (Sangiovese Grosso) on the choicest soils to produce extraordinary wines in Montalcino. The vineyards are situated on steep slopes that gradually vary from 200–400m above sea level. The rocky soils are characterized by gravel and clay in the lower parcels and sandy clay in the upper levels, which is an excellent terroir for Sangiovese (or Brunello as it is known in the region). The grapes enjoy a unique microclimate influenced by the Orcia River, the Monte Amiata Volcano, and the Mediterranean Sea. Extremely low yields, organic farming and spontaneous, natural fermentation create wines of extraordinary character and elegance.

The estate changed ownership in 2011 when the original founder Piero Palmucci sold to Claudio Tipa, owner of the famed Grattamacco estate in Bolgheri and Castello di ColleMassari. The wines of Poggio di Sotto have continued to enjoy a meticulous commitment to the long-standing tradition of excellence, giving them a soaring reputation which is among the finest few in Montalcino.

Poggio di Sotto produces three Sangiovese-based wines: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Rosso do Montalcino DOC. The grapes go through a very meticulous selection during harvest and on a tapis roulant at the estate's reception in order to maintain Poggio di Sotto's renowned quality level. The wines are aged in Slavonian oak casks: two years for the Rosso di Montalcino, four years for the Brunello di Montalcino, and five years for the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. The estate also produces a Grappa and an extra virgin olive oil.
