The bond between the Famiglia Cotarellas and the wine world originates in the sixties, when Antonio and Domenico Cotarella, grape-growers in Monterubiaglio, built the first winery to produce their own wine.
In 1979, the brothers Renzo and Riccadro Cotarella found the Wine Company Falesco in Montefiascone, in northern Latium with the aim of recovering the old vine varieties in that area. A decade of experimentation and study on the Roscetto vine variety, the production of Poggio dei Gelsi started. It is a selection of ES!EST!EST!!! which has given back its luster to a territory and a wine which had been unjustly forgotten.
In 1993, the focus on a peculiar Merlot clone results in Montiano, which has won great acclaim since its release as one of the greatest and most innovative Italian red, standing out of its elegance, precious aromas, great concentration and structure.
Falesco increases its assets with the acquisition of Marciliano Estate in 1999, about 260 hectares, lying on the wonderful hill south of Orvieto in the municipalities of Montecchio and Baschi. The grapes that produce Marciliano come from these vineyards and right there, on this territory in Umbria, the new winery has been built. On its thirtieth anniversary, Falseco started the production of Tretanni, an Umbrian red wine, dedicated to this anniversary since its foundation.
In Dec 2016, Richarddo and Renzo Corarella’s daughters take over officially and the brand was refreshed to include “Famiglia”to mark the generation handover.
Le Macioche Agricultureal Estate is the latest to become part of the family. This acquisition made in 2017 was a dream come true and represents a great opportunity to enter a reference territory in the oenological international panorama i.e. Brunello di Montalcino territory.

Although evolving constantly, Famiglia Cotarella is grounded on some unchangeable tenets. Love for our roots, culture as constant exchange, constant research, curiosity, willingness to innovate and self-innovate. Passion for our work and the pleasure in listening and sharing. Without these values, we would not be who we are today nor would we be ready to face the future challenges.
Our passion for viticulture and the strong feeling of belonging to the territory of our origins have been driving us, for over thirty years, to enhancing our grape-growing heritage, according to a production philosophy centered on some key values.
We select the vineyards offering the ideal pedo-climatic conditions for the growth of our vines and we constantly study the terroir in Umbria and Latium to deeply understand its true potential. Our territories range from the volcanic hills straddling the Latium and Umbria border as far as the fertile countryside around Siena in Tuscany. Each of these lands is a challenge and tradition, wise listening and research laboratory.
From the growing vines phase to the winemaking we implement scientific methods and state-of-the art techniques as we believe that experimentation, innovation and oenological culture are instrumental to revitalizing the grape-growing traditions in our territory.
The constant travel between our roots and the future, the will to discover all the potential of our territories, creating wines that enhance their characteristics and peculiarities.
