Diez Siglos de Verdejo

The Diez Siglos winery is a relatively young project, although it’s also one with extensive background. It was born in 2009 thanks to interest from a group of people who love both wine and the land where they live, who have a desire to keep alive the ages-old legacy of one of Spain’s most exciting grape varieties: Verdejo. A group of 65 vine growers who know and love the land, and who, day by day, care for it and work to obtain grapes of incredible quality. Moreover, they’ve brought high-profile experts on board in order to produce high-quality wines, using winery controls and today’s most cutting-edge technology; wines that, over the course of their short lives, are already growing in importance and gaining recognition at both national and international level.

Impressive Facilities The winery is equipped with the most advanced winemaking technology to produce their wines. However, they believe that there is no reason why technology can’t go hand in hand with a respect for tradition. Inertised stainless steel vats with controlled temperatures where they produce over 3 million litres; fully automated bottling plant, logistics facilities, etc.

Thanks to their premium facilities and their unique know-how, they can boast of their Verdejo white wines and famous Frizzante wines. Diez Siglos uses different kinds of winemaking processes and fermentation methods for their cherished Verdejo grapes, such as ageing on lees, barrel fermentation and producing red, rosé and sparkling (Canto 5) wines.

Rueda Denominación de Oregin The Rueda Designation of Origin (D.O. Rueda) benefits from natural resources that are perfect for producing high-quality wines, and is an area that specialises in the production of white wines that have achieved broad international recognition. Work has been done for several years to recognise and protect the indigenous grape variety Verdejo. Diez Siglos belongs to the Rueda Designation of Origin and meets the regulatory board’s quality requirements with regards to the control of vineyard planting, control of yields by plots, harvest control (health, origin and variety), wine yields from each winery, production and ageing methods and times, as well as the qualification of the wines that are going to be bottled. Vineyards Diez Siglos has 380 hectares of vineyards located at an average of 750 metres above sea level in the northern area of the D.O. Rueda.

The seasons are not well defined in this area and are dominated by long, cold winters with significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. The summers, however, are very hot. This results in grapes that are perfectly healthy and ripe. The vineyards have gravelly soils and produce four main varieties: Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura and Tempranillo. The main work carried out in the vineyards starts with winter pruning, followed by green pruning (removing the vegetative part of the plant to get a smaller number of bunches and achieve higher quality). The ground is oxygenated continuously using agricultural machinery and checks are carried out daily. The work in the field concludes with the highly-anticipated harvest – the collection of the grapes at their optimal point of ripeness.

At Diez Siglos, they take the utmost care over their raw material because it’s the future of their wines. As part of this special care, they firmly believe it is important to harvest at night. This way, they not only prevent possible oxidation of the must, but also ensure the grapes enter the winery at optimal temperature. The harvest is transferred from the vineyard to the winery as quickly as possible to keep the grape's characteristic properties intact. Hence why majority of their vineyards are located next to the winery to reduce grape transfer times.
