Castello di Nipozzano

Castello di Nipozzano is a wine estate located on the mountain slopes of the Chianti Rufina area with a fantastic view of the Arno River Valley. The castle was built as a defensive fortress in the year 1000 and is now one of several estates in Tuscany owned by the major Italian wine producer Marchesi de Frescobaldi. The history of the Frescobaldi family starts over a thousand years ago and is closely connected with the history of Tuscany and Florence city. The first Frescobaldi family members started as bankers, but evolved to become patrons of significant structures in Florence (the Santa Trinita bridge and the Basilica of Santo Spirito). Today the 11th century castle houses the winery's cellar, where the estate's wines are produced and cask-aged.

The Castello di Nipozzano estate is the symbol of Frescobaldi's continuity and long winemaking history. The first documentation of the renowned wines of Nipozzano dates back to the Renaissance, when great artists such as Donatello and Michelozzo Michelozzi regularly purchased wine from the estate. Although Sangiovese and Cabernet are the main grapes grown in the vineyards, the winery is also known for its early planting of non-regional varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The rich clay and limestone soil and dry, well-ventilated weather compose the ideal terroir for the production of wines. Nipozzano wines are elegant, well-balanced and full-bodied, with firm structures to last them over many years.

The Frescobaldi name carries an on-going responsibility of cultivating the best of Tuscan diversity and fine wines. They place great importance on communicating and promoting the culture of Tuscany and its different territories through their estates, wines and value-enhancing projects. They're also known for using sustainable cultivation of the land to produce fine wines that represent the diversity of Tuscany. As of 2012, their estates have received AgriQualità certification from the Region of Tuscany. The certification is awarded for the use of ecologically sustainable farming techniques compatible with protecting the natural environment. They use green energy sources (photovoltaic systems and a modern pyrolysis plant fuelled by wood from their PEFC-ceritfied forests) to produce excellent wines that are exported to over 60 countries world-wide in light-weight and environmentally friendly bottles.
