Casarena Bodega y Viñedos

Casarena is elevating the Argentine wine industry with their discovery of new terroirs and single vineyard wines from some of the rarest vineyards in the world.

As custodians and interpreters of Luján de Cuyo, Casarena voices the identity and diversity of the terroir. They proudly make wines with grapes from Casarena's vineyards, which are cared for in a sustainable way following their values and commitment to the ecosystem.

History

Casarena is located in the heart of Perdriel, just a short 20 minute drive from the City of Mendoza. This viticulture project began in 2007 after the refurbishment of a century-old family winery, which was built in 1937.

Within Luján de Cuyo, Casarena has different estates with different geographical profiles, such as height, orientation and soil composition. Each type of soil was deeply explored in order to showcase all the possible expressions of the same varietal in a single zone. With all the characteristics Luján de Cuyo has on offer, it is the perfect region to create wines that have their own unique hallmark.

Winemaker Leandro Azin and Agronomist Pablo Ceverino are two of the best young talents in Argentine wine. The team continues to conduct ongoing intensive soil research on their vineyard sites that are unlike any other terroir found in Lujan de Cuyo. Their dynamic and collaborative teamwork in the vineyard and at the winery is the core behind Casarena’s award-winning wines that have such authentic expression of their unique vineyard sites.

The name “Casarena” is a creative merging of the Spanish words “casa” (house) and “arena” (sand), and is a tribute to the sand-colored stone winery and the sandy soil that their estate is built on.

All Casarena wines are vegan and sustainable certified; they are also working to obtain organic certification.

Vineyards

Jamilla Vineyard

Jamilla Vineyard surrounds the winery building and is surrounded by a privileged view. Jamilla Vineyard is certified in its process to becoming organic. It sits at an altitude of 940 metres above sea level and was first planted in 1995. Its soils are made up of what used to be part of the Mendoza River, therefore its main characteristic is the presence of boulders. The soil profile is made up of a first clay-loam layer, followed by a gravel layer and boulder in different sizes. These conditions allow the soil to have a better drainage.

Naoki Vineyard

Naoki Vineyard is located in a zone that was previously judged as impossible for vineyards to flourish in due to the lack of water and the presence of hardpan in all the estate. Casarena has transformed its terraces into a model vineyard, working on the principles of biodiversity. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 940 metres above sea level and was first planted in 2010. It has an east-west steep slope, which offers exceptional opportunities for micro-terroirs: different zones with sun exposition; different thermic impacts and rustic soil, stony and with calcareous cementation that can be impenetrable. Extreme conditions different from others zones in Agrelo, which make this vineyard a unique place for different enological expressions.

Lauren Vineyard

Lauren Vineyard is located in the coldest zone of Agrelo. Temperature range between day and night is sharp, which allows the vines to rest at night during the adaptation period for the different varietals. This expresses the terroir in an outstanding manner. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 918 metres above sea level and was first planted in 2006. What stands out is the depth of the soil, where you can identify different layers: the first layer is pure soil with a clayey texture; then a transition layer with a higher granulometry, and a third layer with a sandy-loam texture. These characteristics help the development of different varietals.

Owen Vineyard

Owen Vineyard is located on the mythical Cobos Street, which is called the “survivor” by local people. Traditional pergolas from 1933 rise as sculptures among its alleys. What catches one’s attention is the variety of soils, which changes every few meters and allows Casarena to do great terroir work. Owen Vineyard is the active gem of Luján de Cuyo. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 960 metres above sea level and was first planted in 1993. The vineyard has a great variety of soils, which allows Casarena to discover sectors with a really deep clayey profile, going through shallow boulders mixed with clay and sand, until they find soils with a profile dominated by boulders, rich in calcareous sediments and high mineral potential.
