Founded in 1854, Allegrini is one of the most renowned wineries in the world. The Allegrini family is also one of the most reputed and recognised wine families in the Italian countryside. The Allegrini family’s history can be traced back to the sixteenth century, when the first generation of the family planted vines in the areas of Fumane and Valpolicella. Notarial records reveal that the family played a prominent role in the local community as one of the most important landowners, always involved in agricultural work and local traditions.
The family estate covers 120 hectares of vineyards in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico area. The family has been growing grapes here for six generations, but the estate in its current form was founded by Giovanni Allegrini. When he passed away in 1983, it passed to his three children, who ran it together until Walter’s death in July 2003. Franco now looks after the vineyards and is the winemaker, and Marilisa is director of marketing.

Currently, the family’s cultivation and harvest processes are done on six sprawling vineyards spread across Italy: Palazzo Della Torre, La Grola, La Poja, Villa Cavarena, Fieramonte and Monte Dei Galli. The Palazzo Della Torre comprises of 26 hectares of fertile land and is famous for the cultivation of Corvina, Sangiovese and Rondinella. Located at the foothills of Fumane, this vineyard contains limestone-rich soil that ensures the fruits grown here are sugary and full-bodied. The La Grola vineyard is located in the town of Sant’ Ambrogio and contains 30 hectares of mineral-rich soil. Corvina and Syrah grape varietals are cultivated here in large numbers. The La Poja vineyard is very small, only covering an area of 2.65 hectares. However, this is where the most prestigious and unique grape varietal of the Allegrini family, the Corvina Cru, is cultivated.
The Villa Cavarena is an estate whose history dates back to the early 18th century. It covers an area of about 20 hectares and is regarded as one of the most significant vineyards of Valpolicella. In the same area of this vineyard, you will also find the 10 hectare vineyard of Fieramonte. The Monte Dei Galli vineyard is located towards the southeast of Fumane and covers an area of about 10 hectares. Corvina Veronese, Corvinone, Rondinella and Oseleta grape varietals are grown in all three of these vineyards.
Marrying perfection of the ancient appassimento process instrumental in Amarone winegrowing with the development of some of the Veneto’s preeminent vineyard sites, the family upholds a lasting legacy of excellence while continuing to innovate. Allegrini modernised appassimento winemaking by numerous measures, notably reducing bitterness and emphasising desirable phenolic flavour compounds by adding dried fruit to previously vinified, fresh wine in lieu of passing fresh wine over grape pomace, which was traditionally done for Amarone. The Allegrinis pair modern techniques such as site selection by soil type, high density planting and guyot trellising to develop wines that demonstrate the incredible potential of a renewed approach to this historic region.
